What do you know about sectionals? Do you think of them as a kind of overgrown sofa? Wrong! Actually sectionals come in almost every shape and size imaginable. Whether you’re looking to redecorate your sprawling family room or move into a cozy apartment, there’s a sectional for you.

Size Up the Space

One common misconception about sectionals is that they take up a lot of space and are only suitable for large rooms. Not so! In fact, sectionals can be real space-savers, as they offer maximum seating options in one versatile unit.

Of course, when shopping, consider first the size of your room and how much floor space you have to work with. As the old adage goes, measure twice and buy once.

But also know that sectionals come in three basic shapes, with L and U shapes being the most popular. The L-shape can be as small as a loveseat with a long chaise – usually referred to as a sofa chaise, a perfect choice for smaller seating areas. U-shape sectionals are great for larger rooms, as they provide plenty of seating for family gatherings or hosting friends.

However, for the more adventurous, there exists a semicircular model. This is a really cool option for large rooms, especially in an open-space living room as well as in a home-theater room.

Find the Perfect Fit

Typically, a sectional is composed of several parts. Since they will need to connect to another piece at the other end, most sectional pieces have at least one arm. The key is getting the right parts – left or right – that best suits your room.

How do you determine that? A good rule of thumb is to always think about the arm of the sectional. Right Arm Facing (RAF) means that the arm is on the right side when you face the piece, Left Arm Facing (LAF) on the left side. Getting the two ends correct is one of the biggest challenges and requires some planning.

And then, there are modular sectionals, which are different from the above in that the individual pieces are not equipped with hooking brackets making them easier to move around to assemble different configurations for improved traffic flow or for no other reason than to simply change things up.

Style, Form and Function

With all the options available out there, it might be worthwhile to do a bit of research on-line to find styles and models you prefer before venturing into the showroom. Chances are your sectional will be the focal point of the room so be mindful of the style of room you’re looking to create. Is your sectional going to grace a formal living room? Or host family and friends in a casual family room? Or maybe entertain dates in a modern bachelor pad? Before selecting, make sure it enhances, not detracts from, the overall feel of your room.

As for covers, you’ll discover a dizzying array of beautiful colours and fabrics to choose from. Where to begin? Well, your lifestyle is a good place to start. If the kids and furrier members of the family are going to make themselves comfy on it, you’ll no doubt want something durable and easy to clean such as distressed leather. But if red wine is your thing, or snacking while binge-watching Netflix, white is probably not your best colour option. You get the idea.

When in doubt, neutral colours are always a safe bet (beige, tan, light grey), as they usually match most decors.

Lastly, when it comes to choosing fabrics—sit on it! Seriously, the only way to really know if you’ll like a fabric is to feel it, so, have a seat.
