King, Queen, Double, Twin!  What do I want? Which do I need? What determines the size selection of your mattress depends on a few factors. Your body type and size is clearly your first consideration.  The size of the room will also determine how large or small your mattress should be while your budget would be the final consideration.  How you sleep also governs the size of your mattress. Do you wrestle in your sleep or do you sleep like a log all night? So let’s review the 5 typical sizes of mattresses on the Canadian market to help you find the right size for you.

Mattress Dimensions

Twin (Single) Mattress

A single, also known as a twin mattress is the smallest size available, other than a crib. Twins are approximately 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. They are typically designed to fit into tight spaces, for children coming off of cribs, and some single dwellers who have that preference. Alternatively, the twin XL is about 5 inches longer; perfect for growing teenagers and for college dormitories. So, if you like a roomier bed and want to avoid dangling feet and arms, start your search in the double or queen size aisles.

Double (Full) Mattress

Also called a full-size mattress, the double is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long – 15 inches wider than the twin. This model does not offer much personal space when sharing the bed with someone else. If you are big and tall, then this bed will not rock your world. However, if you are looking to set up a guest room, a double mattress is an easy and versatile choice. Double mattresses are also popular among teenagers who enjoy the extra space and option to sleep diagonally without falling off! If you don’t need too much mattress, then a double bed is the one for you.

Queen Mattress

Queen mattresses are 60 inches wide and about 80 inches long – 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than the double. It may not seem like a huge difference, but the added space can be what makes a good night’s sleep better for the tall and restless sleepers. The queen size is the most popular among couples that wish to sleep close to their partner. The queen has also become an option among millennials who have the bedroom space to accommodate this larger bed and prefer the sprawling real estate.

King Mattress

The king mattress is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long – approximately 16 inches wider than a queen. This model would give a couple about the size of a twin bed for each of them. This is an excellent choice for couples that desire more personal space and don’t wish to interfere with the other’s sleep. It is also great for the big and tall! So if you have the space and budget to accommodate this giant mattress, this is your best choice. There is still one more option to consider.  The California king, which is a whopping 84 inches long, but 4 inches less wide at 72 inches can accommodate the really big and tall comfortably!

King, queen, double, twin! These are easy choices to make when you are armed with these easy to remember facts and figures. Now you just need to find the perfect mattress that will accompany your dream!
