How to Turn Your Bedroom From Boring to a Beautiful Retreat

How to Turn Your Bedroom From Boring to a Beautiful Retreat

Does your bedroom feel boring and basic? Do you want to glam it up and make it a space you long to retreat to at the end of the day? A beautiful bedroom retreat is something everyone should have and we’ve got our top three tips for making it happen.

Three ways to take your bedroom from basic to beautiful:

1) Add or Recover Your Headboard

The easiest way to make a bedroom feel more glamorous and restful is to add in a luxurious headboard. A large upholstered headboard adds texture and focus, and depending on the fabric you choose, it can really add any element you like;

2) Ban Basic Bedframes

A good mattress deserves a great frame. From platform beds with storage to a four-poster bed the styles of bedframes are varied and can help you add your own personality to your perfect bedroom retreat.

3) Accent It Up

Side tables, a small TV stand, dressers that store your clothing properly – all these accent items help make a room look and feel like home. It doesn’t need to be new either! A medium height dresser out of the kid’s room might be a perfect weekend DIY project for a fresh coat of paint so it can now be the TV stand in your bedroom.

Accenting a Bedroom

Look around at what you’ve got and see if you can repurpose and rethink items to make your bedroom work for your needs. Sometimes a great weekend project can yield your favourite and most prized item.

Another great accent item is mirrors and art. Visit your local antique store and find some fun frames, blow up art your kids have created, or frame a precious note. All these accent items help make your room one you want to enjoy.

Three Reasons to Love Sectionals

Palliser Miami

When I grew up in the eighties the sectional was almost always the sofa that graced the playroom or messy TV room in the basement. This was the case in my house and certainly all of my friends’. A big messy couch that constantly separated and ‘made’ us lose our Gameboys in between the various sofa pieces.

Now a full-fledged grown-up and furnishing my own home I’ve come to realize the sectionals of the past are no longer and today’s sectionals give you so many reasons to love them. With simple attachments to keep today’s sectionals as one, there are so many reasons to consider a sectional as your sofa of choice, here are my top three.

Any Size, Any Space, Any Style

Are you a mid-century modern fan? Do you prefer deep and luxurious? Do you have a tiny space or a massive one? The real beauty of sectionals is there is a configuration for every possible style or space. You can go for a classic look or a super modern look, you can have a soft velvet fabric or a rugged leather, the options are literally endless with sectionals.

Features on Features

A sectional with features like cup holders, storage in ottomans, power and manual reclining, is like a gift within a gift. Not only can you get all the various features of a sofa you want, but you can get features on the features. I like to lounge on one side, husband reclines on the other, and the dogs can snuggle in the middle. I’ve got magazines stored in the ottoman and unless you could fit a maid in there too, I feel like life is pretty good.

Easy to Move & Rearrange

Because sectionals are a series of components meeting your individual style needs, it also makes them very easy to transport. No Friends couch moving scene screaming PIVOT here my friends, nope – moving sectionals from room to room or house-to-house is super easy. This also means you can re-jig or rethink your sectional based on the room or house.

A sectional we moved from our family room up to our cottage recently had one small section removed to make it work perfectly for the space. We didn’t need a whole new couch, but it almost feels like we got one!

How to Keep Furniture Looking Like New

How to Keep Furniture Looking Like New

Sometimes I wish I could be the lady who wraps all her furniture in plastic so it looks like new forever, and then I remember that it is very weird and also probably very uncomfortable. Not to mention, wrapping furniture in plastic for everyday living is not at all practical.

And while I know messes, spills and accidents can happen (especially during the busy holiday party season) there are some simple tips and tricks to help keep your furniture looking like new (without becoming the crazy plastic person).

Here are some of my tips and tricks to keep your furniture looking like new.

Tip #1) Performance Fabrics

Just like a great sports bra does wonders for sweat and support, a proper performance fabric on your sofas and accent pillows can help you by cleaning more easily and being stain resistant. Another great option is choosing outdoor fabrics for your dining room chair seats. With so many fun choices, you can recover your chairs easily in a fabric toddlers, dogs, and messy Aunt Harriet can do their worst and you can just give them a quick wipe down.

Tip #2) Preparation & Protection

While it’s nice to show the wood grain of your lovely dining room table, I find holidays the perfect time to dress it up with tablecloths and runners, adding in some advance protection against spills and scratches. This also helps protect the wood from any hot dishes you need to serve.

This also means leaving coasters out on literally every surface so it’s pretty obvious you want them used. Another tip to help prevent spills from being even worse is to never fill glasses more than half full. This helps guests limit their indulgence, but also makes sure if a glass does go over it’s less likely to run across half the table.

Protecting your wood furniture

Tip #3) Warranty & Protection Plans

Warranty and protection plans for your furniture are boring yes, but very reassuring. If you are investing in quality sofas and solid wood dining room sets, it might be worth investing in a warranty or protection plan to help provide that extra bit of reassurance if it all goes south (despite your best efforts).

Tip #4) Serve Up Stain-Free Foods

While cranberry sauce might be non-negotiable, other stains inducing foods aren’t necessary and should be encouraged to remain off the holiday or entertaining menu. If you really don’t want to serve up red wine, you can even try having a signature house cocktail made with easy to clean mixers. Think through buffet food and self-serve appetizers to make sure there isn’t cheese dripping or sauces going everywhere. Pick items that can easily be enjoyed without a big mess, or be sure to provide lots of plates and napkins.

Tip #5) Clean Spills Immediately

If spills do happen, the best strategy to avoiding stains is to clean them up immediately. And while I know it’s stressful, remain calm and don’t forget to reassure your guests that accidents happen with a smile.
After all, if the worst thing that happens at a family gathering over the holidays is a spill you should count your blessings.

Which Ancient Techniques are You Ready to Try?

Which Ancient Techniques are You Ready to Try

Holistic healing has become a huge business. People are slowly starting to realize that much of their health, or lack thereof, can be completely in their control. Using chemicals to change the body chemistry to regulate symptoms is not getting to the root cause of the problem. Conventional medicine, for the most part, addresses the symptoms only. Enter, alternative medicine and holistic healers.

Just like practicing good sleep hygiene, getting quality sleep, exercising, and feeding the body proper nutrition, there is so much more you can do. Personally, when I resort to more holistic approaches to improve my health, my mind and body respond quicker than with conventional methods without the side effects.

Holistic practitioners all agree that unresolved emotional imbalances carried through the years ultimately yield physical symptoms. Based on Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) for example, constant emotions like fear and anger unbalance the body chemistry. Fear appears to attack the lower back and extremities while anger is understood to affect the liver.

Ruling out any environmental contaminants that can be connected to the symptoms, most of our problems may come from repeated unhealthy behaviours and thoughts. Yoga, acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, reiki and tapping all carry amazing benefits that have the power to transform your health.

Yoga

Yoga

Did you know that yoga is several years old?  Some texts reveal that this practice is as much as 10,000 years old!  Now that can qualify as ancient!  Yoga consists of several practices in one. They include, of course, the physical aspect involving gentle to more advanced stretches and positions. Additionally, it includes calming the mind with breathing techniques while raising conscious awareness.

When we tap into the calm, all body systems will work more efficiently and effectively to fight off symptoms. From a philosophical perspective, practising yoga regularly can have a huge impact on our level of success in all aspects of life as it trains the mind to move with the flow of things. Walking the path of least resistance allows you to be more accepting and create more opportunities while encouraging synchronicities, you may have missed otherwise.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is considered several thousands of years old based on ancient Chinese texts. It uses the body roadmap of meridians which are like interconnected highways sending energy, or Qi throughout the body. When one of the “highways” has a traffic jam, it reduces the flow of Qi resulting in symptoms.

Other than using needles, I have successfully used laser acupuncture which is great for the squeamish. Although the practitioner uses the same roadmap as traditional acupuncture, the laser light beam is understood to penetrate more deeply into the cells to reorganize them and begin a healing process.

Meditation

Meditation

Meditation comes in many forms. Deep breathing over a 5-minute period, for example, can release toxins trapped in our organs and send a rush of oxygen-rich blood into all our systems. We are, for the most part very shallow breathers, but when we breathe deeply, our belly and lower back expand helping us to get grounded.

Sound meditation can include the tapping of brass or crystal bowls, gentle drumming or a singing voice. When our body’s energy frequency begins to match that of the sound healing tools, then we become more balanced. A simple walking meditation can help restore mental clarity and focus. Adding any one or all of these holistic practices to your wellness routine can greatly enhance your conventional treatments potentially reducing them over time.

Can’t Sleep: How Much Caffeine Are You Consuming?

Caffeine consumption and sleep

Tossing and turning can be very stressful when all you want is to close your eyes and have a restful sleep.

Sure, we say we don’t drink coffee, or much at least. But do we consume caffeine in other forms? Studies show that caffeine can be hiding in what we eat and drink every single day. Consumed before 4pm, any caffeine found in food or drink will keep us focused and alert. Any time after that, according to research, it can potentially keep us awake and irritable.

Here’s a list to help you pinpoint the culprits that are keeping you awake when all you want is to sleep.

Coffee

Coffee is clearly a stimulant and that cup, or three before noon will sharpen your focus and keep you moving. Not all coffee is created equal when you factor in the size of your cup, the type of coffee bean, the kind of roast and the brewing technique.

Were you aware that light roast has more caffeine than dark roast? Although for many it is a question of taste, light roast is denser by weight and therefore slightly higher if both are measured the same. Espresso coffee surprisingly has less caffeine than regular roast and comes in at 125 mg of caffeine for a 2-ounce shot versus 180 mg in 8-ounce drip! You can never drink 2 ounces of drip coffee so it is also a question of volume. Decaffeinated coffee is not entirely caffeine-free at 5 mg per 8-ounce cup.

Teas

Teas contain caffeine! Yes, they do. However, the ranges for an 8-ounce cup is far lower than the equivalent cup of coffee. White tea appears to have the lowest range running from 30-55 mg and the highest in health benefits! Green tea is a close second with 35-70 mg per cup and good for you too! It’s the black tea which carries the most caffeine at a range of 60-90 mg but also rich in antioxidants. Finally, herbal teas are caffeine free as they are typically made from flowers and stems of some of the healthiest plants around!

Colas

Colas have caffeine regardless if they are light or sugar-free. These will include all the dark sodas and will range from 22 mg to 55 mg for 12 ounces. Clear coloured soft drinks, lemonades and orange sodas have zero caffeine, however, you need to watch the sugar content as that will equally keep you tossing and turning!

Energy drinks and sleep

Energy Drinks

Energy drinks are, by their very nature, energy boosters. Some come in with a whopping 200 mg for 2 ounces, but the average drink will contain about 160 mg of caffeine per 16 ounces. You must keep in mind that typically these drinks will also be laden with sugar which is equally stimulating.

Energy Bars and Caffeinated Snacks

Energy bars and caffeinated snacks will help you during that afternoon slump, but you must beware of the pitfalls! A mocha-vanilla yogurt may sound healthy enough, but you will be affected by ‘mocha’. The same rings true for coffee or chocolate-flavoured ice cream at about 50 mg per 4-ounce serving, but a Hershey’s Kiss will come in at 1 mg of caffeine each. Chocolate flavoured puddings and cereals will also have high levels of caffeine along with the added sugar.

This is not an exhaustive list so the best you can do is to read the labels when you are reaching for a food item late in the afternoon or evening so to avoid the jitters and the tossing at bedtime.

The Sounds of Silence: The New Relaxation Wave

The Sounds of Silence The New Relaxation Wave

Many people are now using sound to help them relax and numb the internal noise built up over the day. Regularly replacing pings and bells for more soothing sounds is what our bodies need to stay balanced and calm.

The term “sounds of silence” may appear to be an oxymoron. How can silence have a sound? The premise here is to replace the various and constant irritating sounds that surround us, with more soothing ones. Many will agree that our lives have become much louder with the advancement of technology and therefore more stressful. Everything happens quicker and perhaps, easier due to these advancements, but we need balance. The human body has a limit to how much external noise it can absorb before it begins to show symptoms from stress and anxiety.

There is a treasure trove of “sound therapies” that are proven to relieve many types of anxieties both in the short term and long term. The ultimate goal is to regularly take time to disconnect from the day long “noise” that constantly pulls at our energies and irritates our nervous system. We will examine a few techniques and practices people are using to overcome anxiety, stress and pain.

White Noise

White noise can be described as a constant sound like the spinning of a fan, the rumble of a jet engine or the sound of trickling water. When we have trouble sleeping because there is noise in our environment such as traffic or construction work, or for many of us constant ringing in the ear, using white noise will help us focus on that sound instead. Because white noise is a balanced and a constant sound with no highs or lows, such as a fan, the sound is soothing.

Nature Sounds

Nature sounds, like white noise, can also be balanced and constant as a spinning fan. We can select from various sounds like birds, purring cats, rain or beating hearts. For nature-lovers who don’t get out much, the sounds of nature on a CD or sound machine can be relaxing and as well as meditative.

Signing Bowls

Singing Bowls

Singing bowls are ceremonial brass or crystal bowls designed specifically to create a note from the musical scale when struck and sustain it for several seconds to minutes. Many people claim that they are therapeutic and attend concerts held in spiritual or healing centres to help relieve stress. Studies show that the sounds emanating from the bowls can match the natural vibration of healthy cells in our bodies thus creating a balance in the physical body while relaxing the mind.

Chanting

Chanting is an ancient technique to bring the body to a relaxed and meditative state while elevating the natural healing abilities in the body. When we chant certain sounds, our bodies will gently vibrate releasing calming hormones, as well as help us focus. When we are in the presence of a practitioner chanting specific sounds, we are more passive and allow the sounds to melt away stress.

Readily and easily accessible, these sounds are available on CDs, on sound machines and on apps we can download to our phones. Tune in so that you can tune out!

From Sleek to Chic, How Appliances Are Changing 2019

From Sleek to Chic, How Appliances Are Changing 2019

The revolution will not be televised. Instead, it will be baked, it will be refrigerated, it will be washed, and it will be fabulous. In 2019, appliances will trade safe and familiar for unique and bold as new technologies, innovations, and new designs promise to change the way we think about our homes.

Whether it’s reinventing classic designs for contemporary tastes, or using cutting edge tech to drive connectivity and integration; manufacturers have stepped boldly into the future. This year’s hottest appliance trends redefine normal and make the past come alive in the twenty-first century.

Smart Appliances

Wifi connected appliances continue to gain market share as manufacturers innovate towards a fully connected and integrated appliance suite. Bluetooth enabled technologies such as GE’s Chef Connect allow your appliances to speak to one another, providing you with the ultimate automated experience.

You can also expect continued demand for operating tools like Samsung’s Family Hub (below) as internet-enabled tech becomes more and more common in the home. In addition to new innovations, Smart Appliances will continue to improve self-diagnostic tools and increase energy efficiency.

The Family Hub

Samsung Family Hub

Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators have taken the home appliance market by storm and driven demand for wifi connected appliances to new heights. Easier meal planning, better family scheduling, and even entertainment at your fingertips are just some of the benefits of a connected family centre.

As connectivity improves expect the Hub to take a leading role in the integration of your kitchen appliances and expanded convenience features (like automated online grocery orders) will make it a must-have in any busy household.

FlexLaundry

WV60M9900AW DV60M9900 - LIFESTYLE

With the introduction of FlexWash and FlexDry technology, Samsung takes the lead in laundry innovation. Offering up two machines-in-one; the ability to wash (or dry) two loads of laundry at different cycles, at the same time is a game changer. It’s faster, it’s more efficient and as anyone with kids can tell you, it’s a lot more convenient.

Multi-Door Refrigeration

French door refrigerators remain popular, but 2019 will see manufacturers continue to innovate on the bottom mount design. Flexible French-Door refrigeration continues to grow as 4, and 5 drawer models now share the market with the innovative flexible split 4-door design. Programmable and convertible compartments allow for more control, more convenience and also better food preservation.

Retro Design and Bold Colour Palettes

It’s back to the future in 2019 as customers continue to demand unique appliance designs and finishes that express their individuality. After nearly two decades, people are beginning to tire of the same old stainless steel, and manufacturers such as Bosch are putting bold colours back into the kitchen with removable colour panels in their Vario line.

At the same time, retro-styled manufacturer’s such as Smeg continue to offer new and exciting redesigns of old classics, including bold patterned appliances that look like they’re straight out of the art gallery. Hello Dolce and Gabbana!

The Evolution of Black Stainless Steel and Finger Print Resistance

They say everyone looks good in black, and that’s especially true for stainless steel appliances. Black Stainless Steel is sleek, chic and most importantly more fingerprints resistant than their metallic counterparts. With the successful launch of black stainless steel, manufacturers will continue to roll out additional colour variations such as bronze, slate and even white.

Dishwasher Flexibility

Collapsible tines, removable compartments, and adjustable racks are just some of the ways the latest dishwashers allow you to effectively clean more dishes at once. Combined with improved wash cycles, and dedicated cleansing zones getting your dishes clean has never been easier.

Induction Cooking

The most precise, safest and efficient cooking method available, induction cooking continues to expand as consumers discover the benefits of electromagnetic technology. In 2019, expect manufacturers to make bigger investments in induction cooking with more choices in ranges and cooktops, as well as an improved pro-style market with 36” induction ranges.

You’ll still need induction capable cookware to get the full benefits, but look for the induction market to continue to grow as word spreads.

Which is Better? Plastic, Stainless Steel or Hybrid Dishwasher Tub?

Which is Better Plastic, Stainless Steel or Hybrid Dishwasher Tub

When buying a new dishwasher, it’s easy to overlook something as simple as the interior tub. At first glance, it’s true there’s not much to look, but dig a little deeper and you’ll be surprised by how much that interior can change your dishwasher experience.

From performance to energy use, to noise and even price there’s a lot to consider when it comes to choosing the right interior for your dishwasher.

Stainless steel and plastic tubs are the most popular. However certain manufacturers also offer a hybrid plastic/stainless options. We’ll compare all three interiors here, so you know exactly what to expect.

Stainless Steel Dishwasher Tub

Stainless Steel Dishwasher Tub

It’s quiet. The density of the steel tub helps absorb sound, which makes stainless steel interiors the quietest dishwashers on the market.

It’s eco-friendly. Stainless steel absorbs heat during the wash cycle, and that radiant heat helps dry your dishes afterwards. Because less energy is required to dry, stainless steel tubs often use a 450-watt heating element compared to the 600-750-watt elements used in plastic tubs.

It’s cleaner. Stainless steel can withstand higher temperatures than plastic so you can expect water temperatures of up to 160 degrees during your wash cycle. The higher temperature kills more bacteria and guarantees cleaner dishes.

Plastic Dishwasher Tub

Plastic Dishwasher Tub

It’s less expensive. At the entry price point, you can only buy plastic interior dishwashers. For property managers, students, and anyone else on a budget you’ll save a considerable amount of money compared to stainless steel.

It’s durable. Stainless steel interiors are technically stronger and more resistant to cracking, but the truth is that the heavy-duty plastic used to construct a dishwasher will last longer than the life of the machine. Plastic tubs are also made of BPA free plastics making them a perfectly safe alternative.

It’s easier to maintain. A plastic tub is more resistant and better at concealing stains (including hard water) compared to a stainless steel interior so you won’t have to worry about unsightly discoloration.

Hybrid Dishwasher Tub

Hybrid Dishwasher Tub from Samsung

It’s a great compromise. With a mix of plastic and stainless steel, a hybrid interior offers most of the benefits you get from a stainless steel drum at a more affordable price.

So don’t judge a dishwasher by its cover. Now that you know what’s going on inside be it plastic, steel, or something in between you can choose the tub that’s right for you.

Entertaining Confidential: 12 Scoops of Advice

Entertaining Confidential 12 Scoops of Advice

Hosting during the holidays is certainly no picnic. Any movie or TV food host who makes it look entirely effortless must be lying to some degree, don’t you think? And while I know for certain hosting during the holidays will never be perfect, my hosting experience over the years has given me much wisdom which I would like to share as my gift to you.

And so, as the Holiday classic goes about the 12 Days of Christmas, here are 12 ways you can make Christmas entertaining much easier and stress-free.

1) Plan Ahead

You can never start early enough. I’ve learned from years of experience the best plans are ones you have time to work with. Give yourself a few weeks to make sure you’ve invited everyone who should be there, to get groceries, assign tasks, and prep your house. And while it may sound crazy, if you host year after year, it may be helpful (I sure find this to be true!) to keep your old notes and lists (see below) as references for the next year to come. Learn from past years and make your life easier as each hosting year comes around again. I promise you mothers-in-law don’t get any easier but hosting them sure does.

2) Lists Are Your Friends

With planning come lists: lists of guests, lists for groceries, lists for things you need to get done, or buy. Write and rewrite your lists so they are clear and accurate. And as I mentioned, keeping these lists and going back to them is very helpful. One of the most helpful lists I have is the list to help answer the ‘what can I bring?’ question. Because, while I do like my salad/bread choice/dessert better than my sister-in-law’s, I really do appreciate it when she brings her own, plus she also gets to help out, which makes her feel better. See, it’s win-win all around, which brings me to my third tip…

3) Let People Help (but Be Specific)

You can let people help, but you give clear instructions. First, have a list of all the things your meal or event needs that you know others can manage. Your guests are asking to help, so let them. Let them bring a salad, or a dessert, or the bread/rolls, or some folding chairs. The key here is being specific.

Don’t just say, “Lisa, you can bring a salad”. You want to be very clear, “Lisa, it would be great if you could bring a large garden salad with some dressing options for the side”. That way you can assign someone else a large Caesar. I find this especially helpful with appetizers. If you aren’t clear, you usually end up with lots of veggies and humus, which is great, but c’mon people, give me some jalapeño poppers!

4) Probably the Best Lesson to Learn Is to Gift Yourself

Gift yourself the gift of a cleaning service. This one small indulgence is the best gift I gift myself each holiday season. It’s definitely not something I can afford all year long, but hiring a cleaning service to clean the house the day before I host is such a treat and makes my life SO MUCH easier.

5) Store-bought in Disguise

Another gift I gift myself is disguising store-bought as my own. Sure, you could make your cheese platter, but the grocery store provides really great ones, so why not? Save yourself the time and effort and just let them do the work and transfer it onto one of your platters at home. I do the same with pies. Shhhhh…go ahead. Take those farm-stand pies out of the foil and put them on your grandma’s pie plate. No one will be the wiser.

Store-bought meat pie

6) Here’s What They Can Do

Another list of things is the list of the tasks guests can do when that inevitable question comes, ‘what can I do to help?”. Instead of replying, “I’ve got it covered” and then wondering, “isn’t it obvious I need help cleaning up”, or, “there’s a mountain of dishes in the sink you could start on…” and, well, I could go on… the point is I know now to be specific when the offer of help comes. So the next time someone asks, “what can I do to help?”, you can say, “you know Steven, you can help gather up the wine glasses. Thank you so much, my friend, it’s a big help!”.

7) Get Your Kids Involved

Just like making clear requests to family and friends in terms of what they can bring or how they can help, you can also get your kids involved. I like to assign the little kids with taking coats up to our room when guests arrive. Passing around appetizers, or helping to set the table are also great ways to get kids involved and feeling responsible. Teens always love the job of refilling wine glasses and make excellent dish washers.

8) Send Container Home That Night

A great item for those teens to help wash are the food containers guests brought with them. One of my least favourite parts about entertaining is all the clutter from other people’s stuff the next day. I find making sure they leave with the person they came with is ideal, and a good host always sends it home clean.

9) Have a Plan for Leftovers

With any feast, there will always be leftovers, so you’ll need a good plan on how to best conserve them because food should not go to waste. Food waste is also money thrown away and beyond your own pocketbook, the environmental consequences are huge. The easiest and most practical way to conserve food is using the freezer. Save yourself some future meal prep time by making up complete plates to be quickly heated up. Leftovers also make great lunches for the kids at school. In other words, make use of every bite.

10) Block Off the Day After

Sometimes life has other plans (and crack-of-dawn hockey practices!), but generally, I like to make sure I’ve blocked off the day after hosting a holiday party to rest, recoup and get the house back in order. Not only am I tired, but so is the rest of the family. A day to recharge will have you excited to host again next year.

Resting after christmas

11) Thanks for Coming!

Hosting is exhausting no matter how easy you make it on yourself. One of the best lessons I’ve learned in my years of hosting is that the best way to enjoy the evening is controlling how and when it should end. Clearing everyone out before they or you have had too much to drink, or outgrow their welcome makes for happier endings and fonder memories. As the hostess-with-the-mostest, you’ll want your guests to remember you at your best when the part is over too, not hiding in the kitchen until the coast is clear. And, oh yes, make sure no one takes the wheel after one too many.

12) Lastly, Put Your Feet Up & Forget the Mess

The best tip I have for easy entertaining is to end the night by putting your feet up, pouring one last glass of wine, and forgetting about the mess until tomorrow. You remember Tip #10? You’ve blocked it off for cleanup. Instead, enjoy retelling the funny stories from the evening, or catching up with your spouse on all the gossip. It’s really all about taking the time, living in the moment and savouring all the gifts the holiday season has to offer.

Happy Holiday!

The Best Size Sealy Mattress for Every Lifestyle

The Best Size Sealy Mattress for Every Lifestyle

The size of your bed can have a big impact on your sleep, and choosing the right size is an often overlooked, but vital part of mattress shopping. There’s no single size that’s best for everyone – especially when you get a Sealy mattress, you’ll be getting a great quality bed no matter what size you pick – but the size that will suit you best depends on how you sleep and how you live.

Luckily, Sealy mattresses come in plenty of size and firmness options, so you can always find the perfect one to fit your needs. Let’s take a closer look at all the different sizes that Sealy has to offer and see which one will suit your lifestyle best.

Twin

A twin bed is a great choice for kids’ rooms or a small guest room, but it’s not typically enough space for most adults. Clocking in at 39 inches wide and 75 inches tall, lots of grownups will find their toes hanging over the edge. But, if you’re on the shorter side and space is at a premium, it’s not a bad option. Twin beds work especially well for side-sleepers, who typically need less room anyway.

If that sounds like you, one of Sealy’s foam mattresses could be a great option. Their portable, boxed design makes getting your mattress in and out of a small space simple, while the supportive memory foam helps relieve the pressure points and back pain that sometimes come with side sleeping.

Twin XL

If your bedroom has limited space but you need a little extra room to spread out, a Twin XL is the perfect choice. It’s 5 inches longer than a standard twin, keeping your toes tucked carefully under the covers instead of hanging over the edge, but the bed is still slim enough to fit in tight corners.

Stomach sleepers, in particular, will delight in the extra space to stretch, without having to worry about getting cold feet. If you tend to sleep in a full belly-flop, try out one of Sealy’s firmer models, for the extra support you need to keep from sinking in too deep overnight.

six years old child sleeping in bed with alarm clock

Full

Couples can comfortably sleep side-by-side on a full-sized bed, but it’s a bit of a tight squeeze. At 54 by 75 inches, each sleeper has about 28 inches of personal sleeping space, and as we said, adult toes tend to dangle off the edges of a 75-inch mattress. But if getting cozy is the goal, a full-size bed will work just fine for you and your sweetie.

Though couples can make it work in one of these beds, they’re really ideal for solo sleepers who want a little extra wiggle room. Starfish sleepers, that means you! Try out a plush, Sealy pillowtop mattress to maximize your comfort and make your bed cozy as possible and cushion every inch of your body, whether you’re sleeping by yourself or with a partner.

Queen

A queen is the perfect couple’s bed! This is really the largest size you could need as an individual sleeper (unless you’re a real toss-and-turner) but it’s best suited for two. Queen-sized mattresses are typically 60 by 80 inches, leaving you lots of space to yourself, as well as plenty of opportunities to cozy up with your partner.

If you are mattress shopping for two, Sealy’s foam mattresses are a great pick. Complete comfort and movement dampening are vital features when sleeping in pairs. With a foam mattress, you not only have plenty of room to stretch out, you’ll also keep sleeping soundly no matter how many times your partner gets up for a glass of water.

Couple sleeping in king size bed

King

Maximize your comfort with all the individual sleeping space of a twin, plus plenty of room for a partner – and even for your little ones with nightmares. At 76 inches wide, a king-sized bed is double the width of a traditional twin, and 80 inches long, leaving plenty of room to spread out. A king-sized bed is great for sleepers looking for some personal space, or who have kids in need of some moral support to face those monsters in the closet!

Pairing your king-sized bed with a Sealy hybrid mattress is a great way to get the most out of your sleeping space. Hybrids typically have the lack of heat retention and better bounce of an innerspring mattress, plus the superior comfort and support of Memory Foam. That means they’re easier to get in and out of, plus all that extra surface area will stay nice and cool no matter how many people (or pets) are piled inside.

Cal King

Cal Kings are a bit slimmer than traditional king-sized beds (just 72 inches wide as opposed to 76) but they are about 4 inches longer. That means plenty of extra space for tall sleepers or any furry friends who like to join you in bed. That way you can sleep soundly and leave lots of room for Fido to curl up at your feet!

Try out one of Sealy’s Cal King sized adjustable foundations to totally customize your comfort. Whether you like to sit up and read before lights out, recline a bit while you rest to ease snoring or back pain, or lay flat to snooze the night away, you can adjust your Sealy exactly how you want, and make the most out of all that extra space.

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, make sure you’re getting one that supports your life as effectively as it supports your body. Sleeping arrangements, space, and bedtime routines are all important to consider when you’re picking out a new mattress, and Sealy has options for everyone.
