You were always told that if you don’t flip your mattress periodically, you would unevenly wear out its springs. Logically, putting too much pressure on one side of your mattress will make it sag.
Flipping your mattress was supposed to, in theory, increase the lifespan of your sleep investment. Lucky for you, times have changed, and so has mattress technology!
In the past, all we could purchase was flip-able two-sided mattresses. Through the 20th century, mattresses such as these were made from cotton blends and primitive springs. Simply put, mattresses with fibre padding like cotton or wool needed to be flipped for performance reasons. Fibres eventually settle with use and need to be fluffed by flipping.
But foam eventually made its way onto the mattress scene and changed everything. The introduction of foam top mattresses removed the necessity to flip.
If your mattress is not older than 10 years old, then you don’t have to worry about flipping it. Not only are newer mattresses one-sided, but also, depending on the brand, they are built with very durable springs that will not sag no matter the usage.
One-sided mattresses include pillow tops, euro tops, and tight tops. These can be rotated, head to foot or foot to head, but never flipped. Mattress types, such as the Tempur-Pedic revive line, offer this luxury. The patented removable and washable cover with geometric super-stretch top and micro suede sides means no flipping or rotating, and it is allergens and dust mites resistant to boot!
Rotating mattresses is a different story altogether. Just to be clear, rotating your mattress means turning it only 180 degrees. On average, new mattresses should be rotated every 3-5 months. Use your judgment, however. If you notice sagging in a certain area, be proactive and rotate.
