Tired of your old bedroom? Need something new? Want to love your space again? Let’s see how you can change some things around to achieve this. Yes, that means you’re ready to makeover your bedroom into your sanctuary. To begin: there are some things you may love and want to keep (and that’s OK). And there are things you are sick of having around, so move them out of your space (but, hold on to them because you may want to repurpose them for another room).

Now the real fun begins: start gathering ideas and inspiration of what you want, what you like and how you want to feel in this newly laid-out and designed area.

Here are some suggestions to make the transformation: after all, you’ve done this before – why not try something new?

Mix It Up

Yes, it is your retreat, why not mix it up a bit? How do YOU spell peace and comfort?

This is your home, your haven: so make sure your preferences are foremost – not those of your friends and family. Let start by getting you to answer a few questions to get your feelings and ideas going:

  • What inspires you?
  • What calms or grounds you?
  • What do you like to do to relax?
  • What are you into: reading, writing, surfing the internet, browsing through social media, watching movies or gaming?

Here are some inspiration, but also look through your favourite décor sites, design shows, and magazines.

Make a Plan

Now let’s plan the space. For bedrooms, we need to address both sleep and storage options. Typically you will want to fit at least a queen-size bed, maybe even a king size if space allows.

Did you know that the average mattress size today (over 60 % of master bedrooms) is Queen which is 60” wide and 78” inches in length? And that the fastest growing size is King which is 78” X 78”? Yes, the leading size is indeed square.

Think about this: you will spend a third of your life in this room, make it comfortable and cozy.

If you want to know more about mattress sizes to make sure you pick the right one for you, please read our previous article: Mattresses: One Size Doesn’t Fit All.

Measure to Be Sure

Measure to be sure everything fits.

An easy way to get started is to get the room size down on a piece of graph paper or you can find room-planners on-line – so you will be able to see the possibilities. In most cases, you will want to place the head of the bed on the longest wall. Usually, that gives you the most storage options. But, depending on doorways you may have to consider the options.

Light It Up

You will likely have some really basic and boring light fixture on the ceiling that the builder installed. Let’s lose that: get something funky, romantic, or fun!

You may want to cap-off the light fixture altogether (be sure to get someone who knows their electrical stuff). Bedrooms are much nicer with mood lighting for overall coverage and then functional lighting for reading or make-up. If you want task lighting beside the bed, you will need to either add a nightstand on the sides or go to a “pin-up” style lamp (especially useful if space is tight).

Let’s go back to the room planner as you answer the questions below:

  • How much closet space do you have?
  • How much of your wardrobe is hung or folded (this helps you decide how many drawers you will need)?
  • Is there space for a nightstand on either side of the bed (you get storage for a few precious things you need to keep close by)?
  • Do you plan to watch TV from your bed (you can either mount the TV on the wall or will need a taller chest to place it on)?

Taller styles of dressers are becoming more popular; leaving extra space in the bedroom for the largest possible size bed.

Make It Your Own

Make it your own. Yeah, it’s kinda like #1 but with a twist.

Choose colours that make you happy and comfortable. Don’t be afraid to express yourself and bring out your personality. Use accessories (including wall art, mirrors, trays, decorative containers, rugs, throws and toss pillows, poufs and more) to add interest, creativity and express your special style. And, don’t forget to change things around seasonally, so you don’t get bored and are always having fun recreating yourself.

Lastly, don’t be overwhelmed; have fun and do a little at a time … Rome wasn’t built in a day …
