The change in season, especially in North America, is always an exciting and hopeful time when our long winters turn into spring with that distinct melting of snowmen and snow forts, and the slightest ever budding on trees and chirping swallows. We tend to take deeper breaths, stretch a little longer from the long winter’s slumber and peek out our windows past 5 PM when the sun is still shining brightly.

It is also the time of year when we take inventory, declutter and freshen up not only our homes but our bodies as well. With the promise of warmer temperatures, we begin to arrange our lives to spend more time outdoors including napping on our favourite hammock or zero gravity chairs.

We tend to sleep less during the spring and summer months as there is so much more light in our long days. Looking forward to getting out and about tends to be the priority. For some, the morning commute is much more pleasurable when not fighting the elements!

When spring arrives, we tend to replace our flannel or microfibre sheets to the crisp coolness of cotton or cotton blends. Although springtime can still be a little cool, letting more sunshine in and brightening up the bedroom colors can truly be uplifting. Summer can sometimes arrive without notice from a cool spring day to scorching heat the next, it is best to be prepared. Having your lighter sheets and duvet covers or comforters ready to be pulled out at a moment’s notice will surely add to your sleep comfort.

Moisture wicking fabrics on your bed are ideal during late spring and summer to add to your sleep comfort. Additionally, on the hottest of days, keeping the blinds or curtains drawn during the day to keep the heat of the sunlight away from your bedroom will lower the temperature considerably. At dusk, or long after the sun has left, opening your windows a few inches to let in the cooler air will help you sleep more comfortably. As wonderful as it is to open all your curtains and open windows in your home on those beautiful summer days, avoiding this in the bedroom during heat waves will yield rewards!

Difficulty Sleeping

It is easy to understand how those who suffer from insomnia tend to feel the impact most during the winter months. While winter boasts many winter activities the average person tends to be less active during the colder months: being less active may cause restlessness. Also, trying to get that perfect sleep when outside temperatures constantly fluctuate from way below to above zero will also cause frustration when choosing how many blankets you need – although researchers say that the body sleeps better at cooler temperatures. Summer can also bring its own variety of frustrations during sleep; especially when no air conditioning is available.

  • Consider then, a luke-warm to cool shower before hitting the sheets which should be cotton or cotton blend.
  • Purchasing comfortable and breathable sleepwear would also be a great investment.
  • Placing a few small fans around the bedroom can create just enough breeze to keep that hot air moving for a more comfortable sleep experience. Adding a wet cloth or a leakproof bag of ice in line with the fan will help drop the temperature a few degrees.
  • You can add some fun on the weekends by pitching a tent on your deck or backyard and sleep under the stars when the temperatures typically are a little cooler.

BrandSource wishes you a wonderful summer filled with the activities you enjoy most and, of course, restful and rejuvenating sleep time!
