Let’s think about the options you have in upholstery for your main living space. Often we think about upholstery being a sofa and a chair, but before you commit – let’s think about how you will use the space. Then we’ll look at the options.

What’s the Primary Use of Your Space

  • Watching TV, Netflix or other streaming/entertaining
  • Reading
  • Accommodating an occasional overnight guest

The Options

Watching TV, Netflix or other streaming/Entertaining: I love my leather sectional (so easy to take care of and clean) with lots of room to cuddle and binge watch my ‘newest’ favourite. Sectionals are great: the seating options are endless. You simply configure the size that fits your space and lifestyle. Go as big or as little; choose from stationary (stays in one place) to motion (which means you can recline) or a mix of both. In our house, the corner is my daughter’s favourite place, she claims it first and we all gather around her.

Here is one easy way you can arrange your living room furniture with a sectional.

Living Room Layout with Sectional

Reading: that’s my favourite (to no one’s surprise). Whether I am on my Kindle, iPad, iPhone or Browsing a Magazine or wrapped up in an actual book (those are made of paper) … I love a larger, overstuffed leather chair. You might prefer upholstery to add a bit of vibrancy to the room. Why I love this choice: because I can sprawl out to my heart’s content in whatever way I feel most comfortable. Add an ottoman and side table and you’re totally set.

The example below is a typical living room layout with chairs, perfect for reading and conversations with guests.

Accommodating an Occasional Overnight Guest: You need a sofa bed (also known as a hide-a-bed, bed-couch or sleeper-sofa) which is a sofa that can transform into a bed. Sofa by day, bed by night. This is a very popular option for people living in small places.

Now the Add-Ons

If your place is like mine, you can never have enough seating. Especially during Game Night or special Sports events. This is where you can get a little more daring and creative with different fabrics and colours and by incorporating a chair (or accent chair) or two, a chaise (also known as a lounger), an ottoman (they come in so many shapes, sizes and materials), a few poufs or my husband’s favourite – a recliner.

A very popular trend with kids and teenagers is oversized pillows, they can pile on or sprawl out to create just the right seat while they game for hours.

The sofa chaise and various chairs combination below is a great illustration of a successful living room layout providing lots of seating.

Now, take a look around and see how you want to set things up and have fun shopping around for ideas and inspirations.
