Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or needing a replacement appliance, knowing the right configuration for your space is important. It can be a bit over-whelming if you are not too familiar with the different choices available to you.  However, take a deep breath and hopefully, this guide will help you on your journey to find that perfect range. Here’s a breakdown of the 3 different configurations available for you to choose from.

Slide-In Ranges

Slide-In ranges are typically 30’ wide and have unfinished sides, so you will require some handy work when installing, A slide-in range needs to be installed between two cabinets so you will need to ensure the cabinets are cut to fit on either side.  Make sure to reference the installation instructions from the manufacturer. When you push the range into the space there will be approximately a 2” space behind the range, this is where you will need to fill the space with countertop material or purchase a backfill panel from the manufacturer.  To give you a sleek built-in look, the top of the range is usually 2” wider so that the top edges sit flush on the countertop.  If you’re renovating your kitchen a slide-in range would be an excellent choice for you.

On the other hand, if you are replacing an existing free-standing range, be careful because it is not easy to switch from a free-standing range to a slide-in range due to the customization needed.

One of the main benefits of a slide-in range is cleanability.  Food and crumbs can’t drip down the sides of the range like it can with a free-standing range.  Slide-in ranges tend to be more expensive than free-standing ranges and vary depending on the manufacturer.

Front Control Free Standing Ranges

Over the last couple of years, appliance manufacturers have introduced front control free–standing ranges.  Front control ranges are typically 30” wide and have the controls on the front of the appliance.  This type of range has finished sides and can fit into the existing space of a 30” wide free-standing range.  Therefore, no need for a major renovation, you will not need to modify your cabinets or countertop to accommodate. This configuration is becoming increasingly popular among consumers, because the ease of fitting into the existing space, and you still get the built-in look.  Remember, in order to switch to a front control free-standing range, you need to make sure that your backsplash extends all the way down the wall or at least as far down so the wall doesn’t show when the appliance is moved in.

Back Control Free-Standing Ranges

Back control free-standing ranges are the most common type of range in the industry. These 30” wide ranges have the controls located on the panel located at the back of the appliance. The sides are finished so essentially this range can be installed anywhere in your kitchen, even if a side needs to be exposed.

Ultimately, the choice is yours on what your kitchen can accommodate and what style you prefer.  Now there is a lot more to consider when you are choosing a range, but this is a good start.  Happy shopping!
