Washing Delicates Like a Pro in a GE Washer

Woman putting clothes in a washing machine

Raise your hand if you put your laundry in two piles: whites and everything else. This is, of course, a very daring and reckless way of doing laundry, but it is also a surprisingly common one. If you don’t take the time to separate your dirty clothes before throwing them in the washer, you’ll find out the hard way that dark colours can bleed onto lighter clothes and also how easily shreddable those delicate really can be.

Luckily, GE washers prove just how little of a hassle washing your clothes can be. Especially when it comes to thoroughly washing the most fragile of delicate garments like your great great great great grandmother’s handkerchief. GE Washers are prepared to handle it all with these tough, yet gentle, washing features.

1) Steam Assist Feature

Steam not only looks magical, it is magical. If deeply cleaning fabric fibres and loosening stains isn’t magic, we don’t know what is. The Steam Assist feature is a great technique to use on your delicate laundry because it’s tough on stains without hurting or ripping your important items apart. Use this GE washer treatment when you want to get out some mysterious stain that needs some special magic to get it out.

2) Precision Dispense Feature

Other than having an efficient wash, GE washers now have the ability to slowly release detergent throughout a wash cycle with the Precision Dispense feature. Normal washing machines immediately release all of the detergent from their dispenser when you start the cycle, but GE washers know that better cleaning performance for delicates happens when the detergent you added splits into smaller doses throughout the wash cycle so that the load continues to stay soapy.

3) Delicates Feature

If you are really at a loss for what to do with all your fair clothes, GE washers happen to come equipped with a delicates feature, which automatically takes the guesswork out of what you need to do. But if you feel that you want to tweak with the way the delicates feature washes, you also have the ability to change specific settings, such as the amount of water, temperature, and speed of your cycle. Customize your delicates cycle just the way you feel fits your needs.

Functional Places to Put Your Samsung Laundry Pair

Functional Places to Put Your Samsung Laundry Pair

When purchasing a home, it’s not always a first thought to make sure there is a room specifically for the laundry machines. Generally, there will always be a setup in the garage for you to fall back on, but going out to the garage can be very inconvenient for washing clothes. From it being too hot or too cold to just feeling isolated, cleaning your clothes in the garage can be a bit uncomfortable.

For those of you wanting to get a new Samsung Laundry Pair and place them in a brand new area, here are a few setups that would help maximize your space to the fullest.

Hallway Closet

This laundry pair placement is usually the go-to after the garage. If you have a large hallway closet that can fit two Samsung laundry machines, you should take full advantage of it. Samsung washers come in sizes from 4.3 cu. ft. to 5.0 cu. ft. so you’ll be able to go as compact or as large as you want in order to accommodate your space.

This is a fantastic place to put your laundry pair because the closet keeps you in the house, and it usually connects rooms together, making it an easy place to drop off dirty clothes. Store your winter coats and everything else you had previously in your hallway closet somewhere else. It’s just too good of a spot to give up!

Laundry pair in mudroom

Mudroom

Not everyone has a mudroom, but if you do, placing your washer and dryer pair in it would be a convenient idea. The mudroom is located near an entryway of the home, making it the perfect place to remove clothes and wash them immediately. It’s a place that is meant specifically for removing your shoes and other dirty garments before tracking the mess they bring into the rest of the house.

For example: If you have dirty socks, just take them off and throw them in the wash. If you want a warm jacket before going out in the cold, throw it in the dryer for a couple minutes before leaving. It’s right there allowing you to keep your home immaculate by not tracking in wet, dirty clothes from the rain.

Bathroom

I’m sure you’re thinking that adding a laundry duo to a bathroom seems icky. We get it, there’s a toilet in there and having that next to your clean clothes sounds just wrong. But, let’s think about the positives.

You’ll be able to throw a load of laundry in on the Super Speed feature, and by the time you’re done getting ready for the day, it’ll be done! Not to mention, you’ll prevent your bathroom from ever getting littered in clothes and towels. You could even warm your towel up by tossing it in the dryer and pulling it out so it’s nice and warm when you’re done.

Laundry pair in kitchen

Kitchen

Putting your washer and dryer in the kitchen may seem like a counterintuitive idea, but it’s actually rather functional! Especially if you have a small space, putting your Samsung Laundry Pair in the kitchen can help keep your home open.
Depending on the way your kitchen is set up, this could require a little construction to ensure your washer and dryer is

pushed back against the wall and out of the way. You could even go with a Samsung compact laundry pair to help increase the space of your kitchen and avoid another crammed room. Not to mention, you could make breakfast for the kids and get some laundry done at the same time!

Visit our store to get help figuring out where to put your Samsung washer and dryer. Our experts will be glad to offer their services to make your home exactly the way you’ve always wanted.

Ghost Meringues

Halloween meringue with spiders on black wooden tableRecipe from Smart Schoolhouse

You’ll need:

  • 2 large room-temperature eggs
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 large decorating bag
  • Black decorators gel

How to make them:

1. Preheat your Whirlpool range to 200 degrees. As it heats up, separate out the whites of your eggs. You won’t be needing the yolks for this recipe!

2. Beat the egg whites and cream of tartar together by hand or with an electric mixer until frothy. Gradually add in sugar, continuing to beat until the mixture is stiff enough to hold its shape.

3. Prepare a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and spoon the mixture into a decorating bag. Holding the bag upright, squeeze out the meringue onto the sheet. Press the tip of the bag into the meringue as you squeeze to give the ghosts their curvy shapes!

4. Bake for about an hour until the ghosts are firm and a little brown on the bottom. Turn off the oven but leave the cookies in the oven for another hour or two to crisp and cool.

5. Once the cookies are firm to the touch, use a toothpick and your black decorators gel to draw spooky faces on your ghostly friends.

Peanut Butter Spiders

Halloween spider cookies on orange and black backgroundRecipe from allrecipes.com

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup smooth peanut butter
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sugar (for rolling dough in)
  • 1 ¾ cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 24 chocolates, either Lindt Lindor Truffles or mini Reese’s cups
  • 48 candy eyeballs
  • ½ cup chocolate frosting
  • Small pastry bag

How to make it:

1. Preheat your Whirlpool to 375 degrees and prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Combine the first four ingredients together and beat until smooth. Add the egg, milk, and vanilla extract, continuing to beat the mixture.

3. Combine the other dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, and salt) in a small bowl and slowly add them to the wet mixture until it comes together into a dough. Separate the dough into 48 small balls.

4. Spread the remaining ¼ cup of sugar in a shallow bowl or tray and roll the dough balls through it, coating evenly. Place the dough balls on the baking sheet and bake for about 12 minutes, until golden brown.

5. Remove the cookies from the oven and quickly, before they start to cool, press a dimple into the middle of each cookie with a spoon or citrus reamer. Allow the cookies to cool for about 10 minutes before beginning to decorate.

6. If you are using chocolate truffles, cut the spheres in half (if you’re using Reese’s cups, you can skip this step). Place your candy into the dimple of the cookies with the rounded side facing up. Scoop some of your chocolate frosting into a pastry bag and squeeze a small amount onto the back of each candy eyeball, and stick two onto each chocolate candy.

7. Use the pastry bag to pipe 8 thin legs onto each cookie, starting at the base of the candy, to make your spider’s legs. Allow about 30 minutes for the frosting to harden before eating.

Dracula’s Dentures

Dracula Dentures for Halloween made of cookies and marshmallowRecipe from delish.com

You’ll need:

  • 1 package of refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough OR 1 batch of your favourite cookie recipe
  • 1 can vanilla frosting
  • Red food colouring
  • 1 bag mini marshmallows
  • 1 bag slivered almonds

How to make them:

1. Bake your cookie dough according to package directions. Be sure to place a layer of parchment paper between the cookie dough balls and the baking tray, so that they don’t stick. When the cookies are done, allow to cool completely. For a more authentic, denture-style look, cut the cookies in half.

2. While the cookies are baking and cooling, scoop some of your vanilla frosting into a bowl and stir in several drops of red food colouring. Mix until the frosting is smooth and a dark red to pink colour.

3. Spread a thin layer of frosting onto each cookie half. Place mini marshmallows along the round edges of your cookies (or around the whole thing if you haven’t cut your cookies in half) and add two almond slivers for fangs.

With these delectable delights on hand, you’ll be ready to take on any ghouls and ghosts that come knocking at your door! And if you need a new oven or range to do justice to these yummy monsters, come down to [store name], and we’ll help you pick out the perfect appliance to make all your Halloween treats.

3 Reviews That Prove Bosch Built-In Coffee Machine is the Best

3 Reviews That Prove Bosch Built-In Coffee Machine is the Best

It’s hard to know how an appliance works if you can’t truly test it out for yourself before you buy it. For this reason, checking reviews has become a ritual for many buyers before making a final decision.

Reviews are so trusted because they come from people who have decided to just go for it and buy the appliance in hopes that it would be everything they dreamed. And people really trust them because they have nothing to prove and only want to let you know what you’re either missing out on or why you shouldn’t waste your time on such a product.

Because Fall is a great season to enjoy warm beverages again, we wanted to highlight the Bosch Built-In Coffee Machine, and show you, why you’ll want to sip your brew from such a high-tech appliance. Check out these 3 awesome reviews from bosch-home.ca – from real people — that describe why this Bosch appliance is the best for drinking.

1) “Amazing coffee maker”

“Love, Love, Love this machine. My Italian machine died after 12 years and umpteen repairs. Did a lot of research including going to the dealer for a taste test between Bosch and several of its competitors. This machine by far put out the best tasting cup of coffee. When you add in the largest water and bean reservoirs, it was a no brainer. And even though I didn’t think I would use it, the ability to make a cup via an app is really cool. Did I mention I love this machine?” – Glenise

2) “Best part of our new kitchen!”

“I have to admit this coffee machine is the reason I convinced my wife it was time to fully renovate our kitchen. We bought all new Bosch appliances and we love them all (induction cooktop, built-in dishwasher, drawer microwave and convection oven) and we love them all, but this baby takes the prize as my favourite new kitchen toy. The coffee is delicious, the connected app is awesome (we create “coffee playlists” for our guests) and the maintenance is super easy and straight-forward. Love it! “ – malencar

3 Reviews That Prove Bosch Built-In Coffee Machine is the Best (2)

3) “Great machine!”

“We bought this a couple months ago and have had it installed for a little over a month now. We had a nice manual countertop espresso machine for a couple years before this and thought it was great until we started using this machine. We are pretty shocked how good the coffee is that it produces. It was definitely one of the best things we added to our kitchen remodel. Great coffee and just at a press of the button. Highly recommended!” – Dugger99

Now that you know people love it, it’s time to come check it out in person. If you’re curious to learn a little more about this incredible appliance, drop by our store to talk to one of our expert sales associates. We’ll be happy to let you know all about the Bosch Built-In Coffee Machine and why it’s our favourite appliance to make coffee with.

Best Healthy Halloween Treats

Best Healthy Halloween Treats

As we are becoming a generation concerned with what we eat, I thought I would examine healthier but fun alternatives to offer at Halloween. When I was a kid, I barely made it home with my loot as I ate quite a few treats while “on the road”. Now that I am older, I consider myself very lucky I got through those years with no cavities. Many are not so lucky!

So how do we get ready for that night of goblins and ghouls without being known for that house that gives out chocolate covered tofu? Well, of course, we always assume that treats mean some sugary-laden food that sticks to the roof of your mouth or gets stuck between your teeth! Yes, that is true, however, we can redefine Halloween treats without spoiling it for the little monsters!

If you are concerned about your offerings, let’s look at some alternatives.

1) Many big box stores now offer all types of healthy snacks in little packets. So instead of reaching for the fat-laden chips or sticky candy, oven-baked cheesy crackers like Goldfish, yogurt or chocolate-covered pretzels, or your own homemade trail mix in a colourful bag will be a hit!

2) I love the idea of stickers and temporary tattoos to give as a Halloween treat. Hear me out! It’s all in the presentation so get some tall clear cellophane bags, and add to the stickers and tattoos, a balloon or two, a Halloween themed pencil for good measure, and OK if you must drop a little box of raisins!

3) Fruits are no longer considered a safe alternative but dried fruits in a closed box or bag are a great idea. Some fruits are dried up to look like long colourful gummy strings that are fun to eat. Choose the ones that have no preservatives and no added sugar as fruits are sweet enough!

Best Healthy Halloween Treats (2)

4) School supplies and items you use at home are another great way to add fun to Halloween. During this time of year, most dollar stores have themed items like pencils, erasers, goblin topped pencil sharpeners, toothbrushes covered in ghosts and vampires making the bedtime routine more fun! Halloween coloured toothpaste, glowing toy pumpkins or nightlights can be added as well! The ideas are endless. And yes, adding a little treat to eat is also a good thing provided it is wrapped and healthy.

5) If you absolutely must give candy, be a wise consumer and read the labels. Did you know that mini peanut butter cups contain 23 grams of sugar while a mini Hershey chocolate bar contains only 5 grams?

A little imagination will go far and yield great results. Think outside of the box like making orange and black coloured popcorn by adding natural food colouring to the kernels and watch the colours explode! Hair clips with goblins, socks with pumpkin eating monsters, the dollar store has all you need! This will give the little ghosts knocking on your door something to talk about with their friends at school! And just like that, you’ve become the best house on the block!

How to keep your Dishwasher “Thanksgiving Clean” this Holiday Season

How to keep your Dishwasher Clean this Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful. I’m grateful for my family, my friends, my health and if I’m being 100% honest here, once the holiday dinner is done and the plates are piled high I’m really grateful that I have an amazing dishwasher.

From gravy to grease, cranberry sauce and a little too much stuffing I ask a lot from my dishwasher. And with so many dirty dishes, it’s easy to forget that you need to keep your dishwasher clean too.

A clean dishwasher works better, it cleans faster, and it breaks down less often.

So don’t let this holiday be your dishwasher’s last chance to shine. With this handy list of do’s and don’ts your dishwasher will keep you thankful for years to come.

Cleaning Your Dishwasher Do’s and Don’ts

DO wipe the outside of your dishwasher with a microfibre cloth, soft sponge, or specialized cleaning products. With people coming over, you want your kitchen to look its best. And be sure to take extra care wiping down stainless steel finishes, and electric control panels.

DON’T rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. Many dishwasher’s use auto sensors to determine soil levels and pre-rinsing your dishes may result in a less than perfect cleaning. And that means you could be leaving food and bacteria behind.

DON'T rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher

DO run a hot water cycle with the dishwasher empty. Adding a cup filled with white vinegar to the upper rack is all you need to sanitize the drum and keep your dishes spotless.

DON’T forget to flush the drum with baking soda after a vinegar rinse. A cup of baking soda sprinkled inside the machine on a hot cycle is all you need to eliminate stubborn stains and odours.

DO clean the filter. Most European brands, and even some North American models have a manual filter in the drum, next to the washing arm. Unscrew the filter and physically remove any food particles before rinsing the screen clean with a little dish soap and hot water.

DON'T put greasy pots and pans in the dishwasher

DON’T put greasy pots and pans in the dishwasher. I know, I know that’s why you bought it and the dishwasher will get those greasy pots clean. But all that heated, liquid grease is going to run through your plumbing. Once it cools, it’ll solidify. With enough grease you’ll have odours backing up into your dishwasher, you can clog your drains, and even worse. Do everyone a favour and dispose of that holiday grease before you wash.

DO take the time to make sure your dishwasher is clean every day. I’m not saying you need to actually clean it every day, but a quick inspection is all you need to make sure your dishwasher will be at its best when you really need it.

So load up your dishwasher with that holiday cheer, turn it on, kick back and relax. After a Thanksgiving dinner like that, doesn’t it feel great to let someone else do the dirty work?

Great Deals on Appliances Are All About Homework and Patience

Great Deals on Appliances Are All About Homework and Patience

Few adults on earth are not excited about new appliances. New features attract many adults and they genuinely derive pleasure from cool new features such as noiseless appliances or more functions. Having a new appliance is not even half as exciting as buying one. And when you are buying during a sale? Well, that’s when the child in you comes out to play.

If you are looking to buy that dryer or that much-coveted dishwasher, then you need all the help you can get. Here are a few tips you should consider when buying a new appliance.

Tip 1: Do Your Research

When buying a new appliance, it is important to have all the knowledge you can get about it. Don’t be one of those “insert appliance here” people. Check out the features of everything you want to buy. Don’t just buy appliances because they are fine but buy because they have the features you need.

Modern day appliances now come in shiny packages but what are your preferences? What functions do you want? Does the appliance you are buying satisfy all your needs? You need to research the appliance you are buying before you buy them. It will be helpful to check out reviews about the appliance before buying also.

Measuring available space for kitchen appliances

Tip 2: Measure Twice, Buy Once

Once you’ve determined the appliance you are interested in buying, you’ll need to measure. It would be disappointing if the appliance does not fit into your space. Measure to make sure you have enough space before you buy the appliance.

Measure the counter depths, the heights and make sure the doorways and stairs are large enough to take your appliance through. While having a new appliance is great, it would be a shame if it is out of place because it doesn’t fit.

Tip 3: Keep a Cool Head

When you are buying a new appliance, it very common to get the rush when it is closer to the sales week such as Black Friday and boxing week. Forget the pressure of wanting to buy quickly. People make a lot of errors when they are under the pressure to buy.

When buying during this sales period, it is important to take them as a normal buying period and not a sale which is going to end any minute. This way, you will be relaxed enough to make decisions and determine what exactly you want. Start your research early so you do not have to rush when the time comes.

Getting the appliance that you want at a great price is the dream of every adult. It is very important to be ready when these items are on sale. Visit your local BrandSource store for any enquiries you may have on appliances and how to buy them.

A Look Back at Some Innovations in Dishwashers

A Look Back at Some Innovations in Dishwashers

Dishwashing – a compulsory but dreaded chore for every kitchen user. Everyone has a vague memory of putting on those yellow rubber gloves and scrubbing away at some dishes only to repeat the entire process a few hours later. Those days you really wished the dishes would magically wash themselves. Well, thanks to technology, dishes can actually wash themselves.

A Bit of History

Dishwashers were invented about 160 years ago and they have since come a long way since then. The early users of dishwashers must have thought of it as a luxury that only the extremely rich could afford. It’s a different story entirely today, as dishwashers have become an everyday home appliance. The first dishwashers could not compare to the ones we have today in terms of design, technology or functionality.

Over the years, dishwasher manufacturers have added a lot of cool new features that have made the dishwasher the home appliance to have today. These features include pre-soak cycles, removable trays, adjustable racks, improved wash and dry systems among others. All of these new features have been designed to give the ultimate dishwashing experience and to make sure you don’t lift a finger during the washing.

Despite all the additions to the recent brands of dishwashers, this year has witnessed its fair share of upgrades from companies such as GE, Whirlpool and Bosch. Below, you will find some of the latest dishwasher trends that are worth mentioning.

The MyWay™ Rack From Bosch

The MyWay™ rack from Bosch is the best addition to any dishwasher. It gives you the flexibility to arrange your dishes the way you want. Bosch is the 3rd largest rack capacity company in the dishwashing business and it greatly reflects on their machines. Big bowls such as cereal bowls that would otherwise not fit into a regular rack can now be washed alongside other dishes with the MyWay™ rack.

The Power of Jets From GE

The latest addition to GE dishwashers is the unique reversing quad-blade lower wash arm. 25 angled jets are incorporated into this design to give full wash coverage as the wash arm rotates clockwise and anti-clockwise, spraying soap and water from each angle. Simply put, the jet pattern and wash coverage changes with a change in the direction of the wash arm.

The Silverware Spray Technology From Whirlpool

Whirlpool’s innovative Silverware Spray technology helps to get rid of sticky food on your silverware and utensils. The spray technology delivers a concentrated shower to those sticky dishes and keeps you from having to re-wash.

The Connected Dishwasher

This is perhaps the coolest feature a dishwasher can have. Your dishwasher along other home appliances may be connected to your Google account and you simply ask them to tell you how your washing is doing without checking on it. Simply ask Google or Alexa how much time is left for your dishes to get washed. It even sends you a phone notification once your dishes get done. Alexa can even tell you how many detergent pods are remaining during washing!

These are just some of the innovations on dishwashers that are currently on the market. To get more information these new technologies and other useful ones, you may want to visit Bosch, GE and Whirlpool websites or come to our BrandSource closest store to purchase them and save yourself a ton of stress.

5 Ways to Make Entertaining Easier

Five Ways to Make Entertaining Easier

As we move from casual outdoor summer barbecues to more formal indoor meals and gatherings, we thought we would round up our five best tips for entertaining with ease.

1) ‘Tablescape’ With What You’ve Got

Don’t worry about the perfect Pinterest worthy table, work with what you’ve got – you will certainly amaze yourself and maybe even start a new family tradition. Grab your dishes, cutlery, napkins, and tablecloth and go wild from there. Get your kids involved by finding pinecones they can paint, or if you are feeling crafty yourself find some pretty branches on a walk that you can spray paint gold. Some twinkle lights or candles set the mood and your table speaks with personality and you worked with what you’ve got. We love this idea from blogger A Pretty Fix.

Simple Fall Pinecone Bowl Decor

2) Grab a Chair, Any Chair

We’ve talked before about our love of the ‘accent’ chair and entertaining is really where these bad boys come in handy and make entertaining for a crowd easy-peasy. Go around the house and gather up all your unique accent chairs and use them in the living room for a lap only dinner party or around the dining room table for an eclectic (and practical!) seating solution. Reserve your armchairs for ‘heads’ of the table where you have a bit more room.

Check out our post How To Mix and Match Dining Room Chairs.

3) Extend It!

There are so many amazing table extension options out there today. When a table can go from seating six to sixteen I call that entertaining with ease. A small round table, perfect for your everyday family needs, can now become awesomely oblong and welcome extended family. Some tables now feature simple storage for their extensions, making this even easier!

Extended dining table

4) Take a Seat

Take a seat at the table after you’ve got it all gussied up. Can you see clearly across the table? Do you have enough room for water pitchers or wine bottles? Do you have everything each seat needs within easy reach (cutlery, napkin, glasses)?

5) Surrender to the Mayhem

Know that no matter what you do, no matter how perfect the table is, or how delicious the food is, there will be spills. There may be tears, but there will most certainly be laughter. Embrace the chaos of hosting during the long Fall and Winter months and know it will be summer again soon and the mess can land on the lawn once again.

Lean Back Into Comfort With Today’s Modern Motion Furniture

Lean Back Into Comfort With Today’s Modern Motion Furniture

We all know the chair. It’s the one in the corner with two nice sofas flanking it. It’s the one your father sat in. It’s the chair you raced to sit in before your siblings when Dad wasn’t watching TV with you. You know the chair. It’s the ugly brown or plaid recliner with the creaky seat and finicky side handle. Maybe it’s got an old blanket draped over it to try and hid it, like in our house. You loved everything about this chair except how darn ugly it was. If only there was such a thing as ‘attractive’ reclining furniture…..

It’s here! It’s real and it’s fabulous. Yes, lean back into comfort with today’s modern motion furniture. No longer ‘the chair’ in the corner, today’s modern motion furniture can hide in plain sight while providing endless options like massages, extra lumbar support, a headrest or a footrest.

With such style in the ‘stationary’ position, you’d never know this sofa actually provided restful and relaxing (and reclining!) seating for the whole family.

Bugatti Design Reclining Sofa

Or what about this entirely electric powered living room set, where no matter where you park you are sure to be swept away by comfort.

Elran 4089 Reclining Sofa

We all know sitting for any length of time, especially when sitting improperly, can hurt. With extra lumbar support (like below) your back will thank you for being so stylish.

Palliser Leighton Reclining sofa

No matter which option you choose, today’s motion furniture will be once again that piece everyone runs to. Only this time it’s so nice its Mom’s chair…not Dad’s.
